Back to Index of Support Services
Introduction Support services include all of the activities and assistance students need to supplement their environmental training while on the path to meaningful environmental employment.
A great deal of material is available on support services; in fact, entire Web sites are devoted to some of the support services we will discuss. Because of the scope of this topic, this chapter will treat the subject as it relates to environmental training. Our purpose is to raise issues that will create an awareness of supplemental support services, and to point those interested in developing an environmental job development and training program in the right direction.
In the early stages, your plan for a Brownfields Job Development and Training program might focus primarily on a curriculum designed to provide skills and knowledge necessary for jobs created by brownfields economic development. Naturally, the core curriculum would concentrate on environmental assessment, remediation, and safety courses. As planning proceeds and the needs of your students are considered, issues totally unrelated to environmental technology may begin to surface. These issues may become a prerequisite for successful completion of the program.
Support services can be subdivided into four categories.
